The Global Church Is Growing

Headlines about the church today often focus on decline in the West, and those concerns are real. But they are only part of the picture, and not the largest part. Step back to a global view and a very different story comes into focus: across much of the world, the church is not shrinking but growing, sometimes explosively. This is cause for genuine hope.

Scripture told us to expect exactly this, a people gathered from everywhere: "a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues" (Revelation 7:9). What we are watching is that promise unfolding in our own generation.

A Worldwide Harvest

While membership has declined in parts of Europe and North America, the faith has grown remarkably across the global South, in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The center of gravity of the world\'s Christians has shifted dramatically over the last century. Researchers who track global religion consistently describe robust growth where the gospel once had little foothold. Jesus\' words still ring true: "the fields... are already white for harvest" (John 4:35).

Faith That Costs Everything

Some of the most vibrant growth is happening where following Christ is most costly. In places of real persecution, the church is not merely surviving but multiplying, echoing the ancient observation that the blood of the martyrs becomes seed. Their courage rebukes our discouragement and reminds us that the gospel\'s power does not depend on comfortable circumstances. "I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18) is being proven true in hard places every day.

Lifting Our Eyes

None of this dismisses the real challenges nearer home; it sets them in perspective. The church Jesus is building is bigger than any one nation\'s trends, and its future is secure. Let the global story lift your eyes and stir your prayers, for the persecuted, for the harvest, for laborers to be sent (Matthew 9:38).
