“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”
— 1 Timothy 6:6
Few teachings touch the church today as widely as the prosperity gospel, the message that God guarantees health, wealth, and success to those with enough faith. It spreads because it speaks to real longings: relief from poverty, healing from sickness, hope for tomorrow. We weigh the teaching here, not the sincerity of those drawn to it, many of whom love God deeply.
Scripture does promise gain, but redefines it: "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6). The treasure the gospel offers is not a bigger bank account but God Himself, and that is a far richer promise than the one prosperity teaching makes.
Where the Teaching Drifts From Scripture
The prosperity message contains a grain of truth, that God is generous and cares for His children, but it bends that truth out of shape. It treats faith as a transaction that obligates God, and it cannot account for the suffering of the faithful. Paul, a man of great faith, knew hunger, beatings, and a thorn God chose not to remove (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). Jesus promised His followers not guaranteed wealth but that "in the world you will have tribulation" (John 16:33). A gospel that has no room for the suffering saint is not the gospel of the cross.
The Greater Riches of Christ
The deepest problem with prosperity teaching is not that it promises too much but too little. It offers things, when God offers Himself. "Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You" (Psalm 73:25). Christ is the reward. He may grant material blessing, and we thank Him when He does, but our hope is anchored in Him, not in His gifts, so that it holds firm even when the gifts are withheld.
Holding the Heart, Not Just the Doctrine
If this teaching has shaped your faith, you are not foolish; you were offered hope in your hardship, and the hunger behind it is good. The invitation is simply to a sturdier hope, one that cannot be falsified by a difficult season. PraiseHim Club exists to point you to Christ and a healthy church where the whole counsel of Scripture is taught. Seek God for who He is, hold His gifts with open hands, and discover that godliness with contentment really is great gain.

Test it against Scripture
The prosperity gospel teaches that God guarantees physical health, financial wealth, and worldly success to believers who have sufficient faith, often framing faith and giving as a means of obligating God to provide.
Weigh it with:
- 1 Timothy 6:6-10
- 2 Corinthians 12:7-9
- John 16:33
- Psalm 73:25-26
Scripture commends godliness with contentment as great gain and warns against the love of money. Faithful believers, including Paul, suffered want and unhealed affliction. The promise of the gospel is Christ Himself, not guaranteed wealth, so prosperity teaching must be gently corrected by the whole counsel of God.
