“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
— Philippians 3:20
One of the more painful pressures on the church today is the way political division can seep into the body and quietly take the central seat that belongs to Christ. Believers are citizens with real civic duties, and faithful Christians can disagree on many policies. The concern here is not political engagement itself, but the moment when a political identity begins to eclipse the gospel identity that unites us.
Paul reminds us where our deepest allegiance lies: "our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior" (Philippians 3:20). We hold our earthly citizenship seriously, but never ultimately. When a party or platform becomes the real test of fellowship, something has slipped out of order.
How the Eclipse Happens
The drift is rarely intentional. A culture of outrage rewards heat, tribes form, and soon we trust those who share our politics more than those who share our Savior. The danger is when we read Scripture to baptize a platform rather than letting Scripture judge every platform, including our own. Jesus deliberately called both a tax collector and a zealot into the same band of twelve, men who would have been political enemies, and made them brothers. The gospel still does that.
Faithful Without Being Captive
Refusing to let politics rule the church is not a retreat into silence. Scripture speaks to justice, life, mercy, and truth, and believers should live and vote with conviction. The point is to stay faithful without becoming captive, holding our convictions firmly while holding our brothers and sisters tenderly. "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men" (Romans 12:18). We can be salt and light in the public square while refusing to let any kingdom of this world become our hope.
Keeping Christ in the Center Seat
The test is simple to state and hard to live: does Jesus, or a political cause, sit at the center of your faith and your fellowship? Examine your own heart before you examine anyone else\'s, "for there is no partiality with God" (Romans 2:11). PraiseHim Club is a community for believers across many backgrounds, united not by a party but by Christ. Engage your world thoughtfully, love the brother who votes differently, and keep the throne of your heart occupied by the King who is above every earthly throne.
